Project challenge on “Heroes”
Year 7’s recent project challenge was based on Heroes. When someone mentions heroes, you usually think of people like Superman, X man and people with special powers. We then set about looking to see if we could find any local heroes.
We spent a morning at the fire station in Seahouses, where a special unit brought a chip pan, set it on fire and showed us how you should put it out and what could happen if you did the wrong thing and put water on it – it exploded! They also showed us how firemen enter a burning building and get people out.
Once the person was out of the burning building, the First responders showed us what you should do to help someone until an ambulance arrives – we practised doing CPR and resuscitation on a dummy.
We also visited the lifeboat station where Mr Hanvey showed us around the lifeboat, let us try on their outfits and told us stories of disasters which have happened locally prompting heroic deeds by ordinary local people.
We designed our own heroes, giving them special powers for various reasons. We really enjoyed our project and by the end of the 2 days we realised that there are lots of local people who are special heroes – people with ordinary jobs who have put themselves at risk for the sake of others.
