Lunchtimes a new experience at Seahouses Middle

Seahouses Middle School has recently refurbished the dining room in order to encourage pupils to enjoy the whole lunchtime dining experience, as well as to move away from what was thought of as a traditional school canteen.

The school's catering committee, consisting of two pupil representatives from each year group, surveyed opinions within their classes and their ideas were used to help plan the new look.

The dining room now looks like a modern bistro, with a 'breakfast' type bar fitted around the outsides of the room and a mixture of low and high circular tables in contrasting colours of lilac and turquoise. Beech stools and chairs help coordinate the new look.

The room has been completely redecorated in pastel shades with a new floor and ceiling installed. With the new seating arrangements the pupils have the opportunity to talk in smaller groups and consequently the dining room is much quieter than before.

The pupils are impressed with the new look too; "It is a lot less cramped and more modern now," said Romney Gwynn; "It's a real improvement from what we had before." Matilda Cornall; "It's much friendlier and a much nicer place to eat your food in," Alexander Davison.

Pupils in all year groups were given the challenge of painting 'Landmarks of the North East' in art lessons and the winning paintings have been framed and hung around the walls of the dining room. The winners were Matilda Cornall and Romney Gwynn from Year 5, Josh Robertson and Yasmin Williams from Year 6, Emily Hanvey and Anna Darcy from Year 7 and Chris Maynard and Isobelle Cooper from Year 8.

The school also recently achieved The Healthy Schools Award, which is accredited to those schools that instigate a range of health and fitness initiatives.

One such initiative means that school lunches at Seahouses follow Healthy Eating guidelines, with crunchy salads, tasty pasta dishes and a range of mouth-watering snacks on the menu.
