The Lonnen
As part of the Seahouses Middle School Community Week, Year 6 wanted to improve the bridleway next to the school, ‘The Lonnen’. They surveyed the area, took many photographs to show the problems they were faced with and thought about ways they could improve it. Councillor Pat Scott along with Ian Robson who works for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty were invited to the school.

The Lonnen

The visitors watched a PowerPoint presentation (available here) showing the children’s proposals and the visitors shared some of the children’s concerns. The visitors then accompanied the children on a short tour of the pathway, during which Ian highlighted the range of animals and plants in the area, and so discussed with the children, the importance of maintaining the natural habitat.

After much discussion, the children decided they wanted to tidy the area up but also did not want to spoil any habitats for the wild animals and flowers.

After studying the area, Year 6 also asked Ian and Mrs Scott if it would be possible for the council to provide litter and dog waste bins for the area. To help decide where to locate these bins, local dog owners were asked where they would like these to be placed.

The Lonnen

In groups, the children then went ahead with work on widening the path, collecting and clearing litter, branches and stones. Walls were also repaired and a border for the path was built. It was hoped that the planting of wild flower seeds would encourage more wild life visit and live down The Lonnen.

After completing their work in The Lonnen, the children then designed posters which will be erected by the council, to help make the walkway a more beautiful place to use, and to hopefully keep it this way!

Project challenge on “Heroes”

Year 7’s recent project challenge was based on Heroes. When someone mentions heroes, you usually think of people like Superman, X man and people with special powers. We then set about looking to see if we could find any local heroes.

We spent a morning at the fire station in Seahouses, where a special unit brought a chip pan, set it on fire and showed us how you should put it out and what could happen if you did the wrong thing and put water on it – it exploded! They also showed us how firemen enter a burning building and get people out.

Once the person was out of the burning building, the First responders showed us what you should do to help someone until an ambulance arrives – we practised doing CPR and resuscitation on a dummy.

We also visited the lifeboat station where Mr Hanvey showed us around the lifeboat, let us try on their outfits and told us stories of disasters which have happened locally prompting heroic deeds by ordinary local people.

We designed our own heroes, giving them special powers for various reasons. We really enjoyed our project and by the end of the 2 days we realised that there are lots of local people who are special heroes – people with ordinary jobs who have put themselves at risk for the sake of others.

Young Sports Leaders Skipping Training

Our Year 8 Young Sports Leaders took part in a skipping workshop run by a Leeds based company, Skipping School, on Thursday 23rd April.

Chris, the course teacher, was impressed by the groups' enthusiasm, determination, good humour and positive attitude.

The Sports Leaders were able to improve their own skipping skills learning lots of new tricks and they are now out on the yard with new skipping robes we have bought, teaching our younger pupils.

Dining room art competition
Over the last few months, our school catering committee have been working with staff to think of ways of improving our surroundings when we eat at lunchtime in school. The building work and new furniture is all in place now and the walls are decorated with some very tasteful pictures!

Each year we will have two pictures from pupils in each year group and this year the theme is “Landmarks of the North-east of England”. Entrants had to think carefully, not only about which landmark but also which materials they wanted to use and the composition of their work.

The winning entries are framed and displayed in the dining room, but also in the corridor are a selection of pictures which we thought were worthy of being seen by everyone – well done!

The winners in our 2007 competition were: Chris Maynard and Isobelle Cooper in year 8, Anna Darcy and Emily Hanvey in year 7, Josh Robertson and Yasmin Williams in year 6 and Matilda Cornall and Romney Gwynn in year 5.

North Pole Challenge
Seahouses Middle School Pupils win the North Pole Challenge

Just before the Easter holidays all Northumberland Middle Schools were contacted by Brian Foulds, a local explorer who was planning a trip to the Artic to ski to the North Pole to raise awareness of the changes of climate change.
He challenged all pupils in Northumberland to invent a Superhero who had special powers which would combat climate change.

Many of our pupils took part in the competition and we were delighted to learn that Sarah Wright in Year 7 has been awarded third prize winning £25 whilst Joe Carruthers, a Year 5, pupil won first prize of £100! Congratulations to them both.

We have been given the opportunity to let a small number of children talk to Brian on a satellite phone when he is actually at the North Pole. When he returns from the expedition he has also promised to come in to school to tell us about his experiences.
Brian set off on his expedition on the 14th April and you can follow his progress at

Ofstead Report 2007
Dear Parents,

I am delighted to be able to send you a copy of the summary of our recent Ofsted Inspection. A copy of the full report is available on the Ofsted website, http://www.ofsted.gov.uk or from school.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the report is the unequivocal recognition that our school is at the heart of the community it serves and that everyone involved, children, parents, governors and staff are committed to its development.

Over the next few months we will be drawing up an action plan in line with the inspector’s recommendations which ensures that our Very good school continues to develop.

If you want to discuss any aspect of the report in further detail please let us know.

Yours sincerely,

J. Harris
