World Maths Day

Seahouses Middle School helped break the world record for the number of mathematical sums answered correctly in a day.
The students had to play against each other at mathematical games. They were captivated by the fact that they were playing in real time with other children across the globe.
In one day the children set a fantastic new world record with 182,455,169 correct answers.
Total questions correctly answered by our students: 36,395
Total time on task by our students: 3,734 minutes
Total number of our students that participated: 131
Average improvement in mental arithmetic by our students: 111.9%
Year 5
Mathematics is everywhere
When Sunderland and Newcastle United played their derby match Year 5 were studying statistics. We looked at the league tables. We found out what all the headings meant and interpreted the information.
P = Games played.
Home = All the games played at their own stadium.
Away = All the games played at the opposition’s stadium.
W = Games won.
D = Games drawn.
L = Games lost.
F = Goals for – Goals they score.
A = Goals against – Goals the opposition score.
GD = Goal difference.
Pts = Points. A team gets 3 points if they win, 1 for a draw and 0 if they loose.
We looked at our favourite teams and where they could be found in the table. We looked at their statistics and asked questions when we compared their results with other teams.
The table showing the fixtures and results looks like a train timetable. We used it to see the results of games already played and when games would be played.
Newcastle will play Sunderland next on April 19th.

Year 6
Car Registrations
When and where were cars registered.
Year 6 carried out a mathematics project into car number plates.
Surveys were carried out. Tally charts were made. Microsoft excel was used to present the information.
We collected data showing the first two letters and the two numbers on cars in Seahouses. Using the internet site http://waxxtm.com/registrations.html we found out where they were registered.
To find the year it was registered….

Black months are 0? Red months are 5?
Eg
March 2008 - August 2008 = 08
September 2008 - February 2009 = 58
Year 7
Year 8
Ten children from years 7 and 8 took part in ‘The United Kingdom Junior Mathematical Challenge’. This encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve non-standard problem.
Certificates were awarded to the highest scoring 40% of candidates. (6% gold, 13% Silver and 21% Bronze.)
The children received 2 Golds as well as Silver and Bronze awards.
