Science

Year 6 were delighted to be invited to a Christmas Lectures organised by Science Learning Centre North East.

We travelled to Covance in Alnwick where we watched a lecture by Blue Peter Science expert, Steve Mould!

During this lecture, entitled ‘Poking your Brain’, Steve Mould amazed us with some science demonstrations that showed the amazing way our brains work. Steve showed us some of his physics tricks, mental mind games and some amazing illusions, that all demonstrated how our brain and senses help us in everyday life.

A thoroughly interesting and entertaining afternoon was had by all!

We can’t wait for next year!

The first car to come off the production line at Nissan Sunderland plant was the Bluebird.  Nissan have come a long way since then.

Some children from Year 7 and Year 8 had the opportunity to visit the site. We enjoyed a talk about the developments and modifications they had done to their cars over the years.  There was an emphasis on change of power source.  The advantages of using electricity to power the new Leaf car were looked at.  The Leaf will soon be in production in 2013 and will be constructed at the Sunderland Plant along with the batteries that will power them.

We were shown video clips of how the cars changed from metal sheets and different components into the finished product.  We were then taken to the production line where we saw robots, computer controlled systems of distribution and workers constructing the cars.  Each car was different in terms of model, colour, left or right hand drive, alloy wheels or not, different interiors etc....in fact they were all custom made.  It was amazing to see how all the different parts found their way to the specific cars.
Completed cars were rigorously tested and checked.

It was an fantastic experience and everyone had enjoyed the afternoon. We were all given a gift of a rechargeable torch and were complemented on our behaviour.

Seahouses received a free tree pack. Active kids teamed up with the Woodland Trust to give the children a chance to grow a selection of deciduous trees. 30 trees were planted by Year 5 children.
The first crop we could taste this season was the rhubarb crop.  Even though it had a sharp taste it was so good because we grew it ourselves.  The sugar helped to sweeten it up.

The ‘Farm to Fork’ project allowed Year 5 to visit The Co-operative Farm, Hirshel Estate near Coldstream. In science the children have been studying the topics ‘Keeping Healthy’ and ‘Life Cycles’.

We learnt about a range of crops. We examined the seeds, looked at the plants and discovered what products they made. A day on the farm allowed us to search for water check the Highland cattle and find out how old trees were.

We made smoothies out of a great selection of fruit. Some was in season and some had been imported from different countries.
