Caring for our beaches

Community Project week for  Year 5 was all about the beaches in the Seahouses area.

Our beaches are beautiful and are the habitat for a great variety of flora and fauna.  The only problem is that with the waves washing our shores and the tourists visiting we get many things washed up and deposited on the sands and on the rocks.

Working alongside Jane and Kevin from the National Trust we decided to do something about it.

We first had to identify the different types of waste.  There was bio-degradable and non bio-degradable. We were to collect the non bio-degradable items and group them into materials that could be recycled and those that couldn’t. After carefully considering health and safety the students were armed with dustbin liners, gloves and tools for picking the litter up.

When the tide had gone out Jane and Kevin helped the children capture and identify some of the animals that can be found in the rock pools. It was amazing that they were all living on our door steps and it made us realise that we must look after our community.

As a result of our hard work our beaches are safer and plants and animals have a greater chance of surviving.
