Year 8 Project Challenge

It is often difficult to draw our minds away from the typical stereotype of someone who is homeless. The dirty, scruffy, smelly weirdo sleeping in a shop doorway, begging for change that they will probably just go and blow on drugs or alcohol.  The Year 8s found that it really can affect people in all walks of life, including those that you might not expect.  They examined the causes of homelessness and researched charities that help those both in the immediate future by giving them food and shelter and those that look to solve the bigger life issues.

As part of this Project the class were challenged to put on an event that raised awareness to the rest of the school about the issues of homelessness.  This included a People’s Kitchen dishing out hot cups of tea, quizzes, a homeless crazy golf, a back pack game and even a sleeping bag obstacle course helping the rest of the year groups, and staff, engage with the realities and facts of homelessness! On top of all this the Year 8 class surprised everyone with a flash mob dance and a performance of Ed Sheeran's very topical song 'A-Team'.  Nicole had written and recited a moving poem describing how some homeless people may feel as they watch the world go by.

The event was a huge success!  Not only did everyone enjoy themselves but also came face to face with the facts about homelessness in the communities around them.

In extreme cases a school may have to close during the day due to the severe weather and your child will be sent home early.  Do you have a procedure in place for the care of your child until you arrive home?  You could;

  • Make arrangements with a relative or close friend to care for your child until you are able to get home.
  • Inform the school and transport provider of these arrangements as it may be necessary for your child to seek alternative transportation from school.
  • Make sure the School and Transport provider have an “In Case of Emergency” contact telephone number.
  • Above all, make sure your child is aware of the arrangements.

We are going to support this years Children in Need Appeal on Friday 18th November Pudsey Bear 2011by allowing pupils to come to school in non-uniform if they make a donation of £1.

We are also going to have a cake stall at afternoon break so we need as many pupils as possible to bring in cakes or biscuits which we can sell to make even more money for this appeal.

Every penny raised will make a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged children in the UK and abroad.

Thank you in anticipation of your support.

From – The School Council

The School Council have been have been taking part in Operation Christmas Child, this is a project through which disadvantaged children in poorer countries receive Christmas presents. This is because people in this country wrap and fill a shoe box with presents.

Every year Operation Christmas Child is made possible through the amazing support of thousands of children and adults in the UK who pack shoeboxes full of goodies for children in parts of Africa, Central Asia and Eastern Europe.

The School Council planned, produced and performed an assembly to the rest of the school to encourage other pupils to become involved in this fantastic project. In an act of extreme generosity, the School Council also decided to spend their budget for the term creating as many shoeboxes additional boxes as possible.

As a result of the hard work and enthusiasm of the School Council, Seahouses Middle School sent 28 shoeboxes to children less fortunate than ourselves.

Well done to everyone involved!
