Year 6

In Year 6 Design and Technology we have been designing and making glove puppets. These were to be used in a first school puppet show. In groups we decided on a fairy tale and then each made a character from this story.

We thought about how we could make sure these would appeal to the young audience. Because these were made for a puppet show we had to make sure they were neatly sewn and looked like the characters we had chosen.

To try and gain and maintain the attention of a young audience. we thought about colour, accessories and also trying to make these funny, beautiful or scary depending on the character.

Year 6 have been designing and building air raid shelters

In Year 6 Design Technology we have been looking at Structures.
We had 3 challenges:
1. Package a biscuit (using 1 sheet of A4 paper and 20 cm of masking tape), put it in an envelope and post it back to school
2. Make the strongest bridge structure with sheets of A4 paper and masking tape
3. Make a structure taller than 2 metres, using 10 sheets of sugar paper and cellotape

Our packaging designs were so good that only 3 biscuits didn’t survive out of 16.
Some people managed to make a bridge structure that was able to support a weight of almost 8kg!
We didn’t have very long to make our tall structures – the problem was how to make them stand for 5 seconds. Some of us did meet the challenge – check out the photos!

Year 7

Year 7 visit to Trotter’s bakery

This term year 7 have been studying the various types of bread available today, finding out where they come from and placing them on a world map.

As part of their bread project, year 7 visited Trotter’s bakery to see how bread is made on a grand scale!
Nathan and Gilbert gave the pupils a very interesting and enjoyable afternoon, explaining what happens to the bread, right from mixing the initial ingredients, proving, baking and transporting the bread to their various shops. Life in a bakery sounds like very hard work with long hours. Year 7 now appreciate the humble loaf much more and are looking forward to designing and making their own bread next half term!

Examples of bread types from around the world: 1, 2 and 3.
